Abstract

1316908 Portable drills HILTI AG 19 April 1971 [15 May 1970] 26755/71 Heading B3C [Also in Division B4] A pneumatic rotary hammer drill comprises a pressure generating piston 16 arranged to be reciprocated in a cylinder 15 by a crank 7b, and a percussion piston 18 within the cylinder 15 separated by an air cushion 19 for transmitting the reciprocation from the piston 16 to the piston 18. The piston 18 includes a rod 18b for impacting a tool or tool holder, which rod 18b co-operates with a seal 15a at one end of the cylinder 15. Reciprocation is effected by an electric motor 1 acting through gearing la, 5, the cylinder 15 being rotated by further gearing 7a, 8, 11, 12 to rotate the tool 20 through an intermediate carrier 22. When the piston 18 reaches the outer end of its stroke, air venting openings 15d are exposed, a further reciprocatory stroke occurring only if engagement of the drill against a workpiece pushes the piston 18 back beyond the openings 15d.
