Abstract
1316072 Electrodes A W SHOWELL (SURGICRAFT) Ltd and J COPELAND 20 April 1972 [21 Jan 1971] 2836/71 Heading A5R A foetal scalp electrode comprises an electrical connector 2, Fig. 1, a head member 3 of electrically insulating material, an electrically conductive helical spring 4 with a terminal at one end in connector 2 and the other end secured to member 3, and an electrically conductive wire (7), Figs. 3 and 6 (not shown) with a terminal at one end in connector 2, the wire (7) extending through an insulating sheath inside spring 4, and the other end of the wire being provided with an arcuate conductive needle 10, Fig. 4, on an arm 11 in a cavity 12 in head member 3, needle 10 normally being urged, by torsion in spring 4, to the position shown in Fig. 4. In use, member 3 is located against the foetal scalp and connector 2, preferably formed as a hand grip, is rotated relative to member 3 to rotate needle 10 to a retracted position wholly in cavity 12, connector 2 then being released and the needle 10 moving to the Fig. 4 position and thereby looping through part of the scalp to hold it against member 3 and establish electrical contact. Spring 4 may be covered by an insulating sheath 18 which is separated from member 3 and/or from connector 2. The electrode is connected to monitoring equipment by a co-axial cable 16 connected to the spring 4 and wire (7) inside the connector. Alternatively, the connector 2 may be formed as a co-axial plug, Fig. 7 (not shown).
