Abstract
1310164 Adjustable beds; on-off castors; furniture feet H KORBER 17 March 1970 [19 March 1969] 27 Jan 1970] 12784/70 Headings A4H A4J and A4U In a hospital bed having pivotally inter-connected back, seat, thigh and leg supports 1-4 respectively, a two arm lever 11 which is pivotable about a shaft 10 mounted on the bed frame 5 through brackets 8 has one arm pivotally connected through a rod 13 to the back support 1 and the other arm pivotally connected to a link 14 fixed to the seat support 2 and the supports are connected to the bed frame through a system of levers such that they can be moved from a coplanar position by raising or lowering the seat support which remains at a constant angle to the frame during movement while the other supports are inclined relative to the seat support. Raising or lowering of the seat support may be effected by an electric motor (73) Fig. 4, (not shown) connected to a threaded rod (54) passing through a split nut (56) and being indirectly connected through an intermediate frame 7 to the seat support 2, the intermediate frame being adjustable with respect to the bed frame 5. Alternatively, the seat may be raised or lowered by the weight of the body of the user; the two parts of the split nut (54) being moved away from each other by pulling on a cable 32", the rod then being free to move when pressure is applied to the seat support by the user and being locked in position when the cable is released thereby causing the two parts of the split nut to firmly clamp the rod. The bed may be modified for ordinary household use Figs.8-12 (not shown). The bed is provided with feet 45 which are retracted when it is desired to move the bed. Each foot comprises an elastic sole 47 which when loaded by a spring 51 grips the floor and prevents any unwanted movement of the bed. Loading of the spring 51 is effected by downward movement of a pedal 42 connected to two pivotally inter-connected rods 43 pivotally connected to the bed frame and to the foot via a pin 44.
