Abstract
1309387 Ships' rudders; stabilizers NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 25 Sept 1970 [15 Sept 1969 24 Oct 1969 6 Aug 1970] 47306/69 52275/69 and 38005/70 Headings B7M and B7V A rudder or stabilizer fin comprises an inlet 118 for a primary flow of fluid, two outlets 218, 318 for the flow, one at each major face of the fin and a fluidic control whereby, in operation, the primary flow of fluid from the inlet is directed at will towards one or other of the outlets, or to both of the outlets. As shown in Figs. 1 and 6, air or water is pumped down hollow rudder stock 118, over splitters 30 and into jet direction control diameter 518 to which the direction control pipes 25, 26 are also connected. Flow in one of pipes 25 or 26 will cause the primary flow to be diverted to one of outlets 218, 318 while absence of control flow allows the primary flow to leave both outlets. A pair of such fins may form the ships stabilizers, the supply of control fluid being controlled gyroscopically. A fin (Fig. 10) for use as a rudder or stabilizer is arranged so that ambient water is entrained at 824, 825 into the control fluid flow, the primary flow passing along chamber 18 and emerging at outlet 816 or 817.
