Abstract
1304468 Discharge lamps V V SYSUN B V SKVORTSOV J G BASOV and V I ROLDUGIN 11 Nov 1970 [24 Dec 1969] 53565/70 Heading H1D A gas discharge light source comprises an optically transparent tube 3 to each end of which is connected a discharge chamber 1, 2 containing electrodes 8 defining a discharge gap and having a light reflecting coating 4 and an external current carrying member 11, 12 extending in the direction of the discharge gap and connected in series therewith. The chambers 1 and 2 which may be U-shaped are made of fused quartz with a coating 4 of reflecting SiO 2 sintered to zero porosity and are connected to the fused quartz tube 3 by conical adaptors 6 having a solid angle of 15-60 degrees. Each thorrated tungsten electrode 8 is a press fit in an alloy holder 9 having a shoulder supporting a Ti cylinder 10 separated from envelope portion 7 by a gap which is filled with a tin wall. Flat wall portions 5 of the envelope carry metal caps 11 and 12 connected in a circuit (Fig. 5, not shown) producing simultaneous discharges in the two discharge chambers. The gas filling may be Xe at a pressure of 20-100 torr. In a modified construction (Fig. 3, not shown) the chambers 1 and 2 are made of opaque light-reflecting BeO or Al 2 O 3 and sealed joints are provided between the adaptors 6 and the tube 3.
