Abstract

1300236 Papermaking; non-woven fabrics BUCKEYE CELLULOSE CORP 31 Dec 1969 [2 Jan 1969] 63535/69 Headings D1R D2A and D2B Cellulosic pulp sheets, intended to be comminuted and air-laid to form fibrous batts, pads or sheets, or used in the preparation of cellulose esters or regenerated cellulose, are made by impregnating the fibres, before final dewatering, with a zwitterionic surfactant of the general structure: where R 1 is an alkyl or alkenyl group of 16 to 22 carbon atoms, R 2 and R 3 are the same or different and each is hydrogen, methyl or ethyl, R 4 is an alkylene group of 1 to 11 carbon atoms, and may have one or more: hydroxyl groups, e.g. it may be a 2-hydroxy-1, 3-propylene radical, and R 5 is -COO-, -SO 2 O- or -O.SO 2 .O-, the treatment being in the absence of any substance making the fibres water-repellent. The impregnation may be by introduction of the surfactant into the slurry before sheet formation, or by displacement of water from the newly formed sheet on the wire of a paper machine.
