Abstract

1398985 Interlaced staple fibre yarn TORAY INDUSTRIES Inc 2 June 1972 [12 July 1971] 25871/72 Headings D1F and D1W A method of manufacturing a yarn comprises passing a substantially non-cohesive non- twist strand of staple fibres 7 through a fluid treatment zone and subjecting the strand to treatment in said zone such that the staple fibres are intertwined with each other and cohere into a substantially non-twist yarn, at least some of the fibres being of a length such that the trailing end thereof is held in the feed means 10 whilst the leading end thereof is being subjected to said fluid treatment, the strand, after the fibres thereof have been at least partially intertwined with each other in the fluid treatment zone, being deflected out of its general direction of travel by contact with a perforated deflecting member 23. The strand 7 is preferably subjected to the effects of at least two fluid flows; for example, the strand is passed through apparatus 14 having a fluid inlet 13 and is conveyed by the fluid through passage 20. The passage 20 opens into a second passage 22 inclined relative to passage 20 and having a fluid inlet 26. Fluid passing along passage 20 is preferably vented through the wall of passage 22 as at 21. The interlacing of the fibres takes place at the junction 24 of the two fluid streams. The deflecting member 23 may act to turn the strand back on itself so that it again enters passage 22 and passes in countercurrent to the fluid flow. To aid coherence of the fibres the strand may be false twisted or twisted before, during or after the fluid treatment. The false twisting may be effected by contact false twister or fluid false twister, in the latter case the fluid false twister may constitute the second fluid stream. In a preferred embodiment Fig. 7, the strand 7 is fed to the fluid treatment zone 24 together with a continuous filament yarn 31. The filament yarn 31 may be fed via passage 11' or may be fed by means of a fluid jet surrounding the passage 11' carrying the filament yarn to the passage 20 in which case the turbulent zone occurs at the junction of the two streams viz point 34. In a further preferred embodiment, Fig. 13, the second fluid stream is fed to passage 20 via spouts 44-47 which may be perpendicular to the passage 20 or at an acute angle thereto, and may be combined with a fluid false twister. The staple fibres used may be synthetic fibres, cotton, wool or regenerated fibres. Also a blend of fibres may be used of fibres of different material, fineness, length, cross-section, crimp or elongation characteristics, or of different heat shrinkage. The intertwined yarn may be heat treated to develop characteristics. A plurality of staple fibres strands may be fed to the treatment zone, the feed rates being varied intermittently to provide attractive yarns. When a filament yarn is fed in addition to the staple fibre yarn, the yarn becomes a core yarn with the filament yarn as core; the filament yarn can be synthetic, crimped, textured, elastomeric, a flat yarn, a gold or silver thread, glass or metallic, multifilament or monofilament.
