Abstract
1398871 Ferrites XEROX CORP 4 July 1972 [8 July 1971] 31285/72 Heading C1J Ferrites are made by preparing a slurry of ferrite-forming metal oxides in a liquid, spray drying the slurry to form substantially spherical beads of mixed metal oxides and sintering the beads to form ferrite beads while maintaining the spherical shape and particulate nature of the beads. The metal oxides may be mixed in slurry form with conventional mixing equipment or they may be premixed before contact with a liquid medium. If the spherical beads are fired in a rotary kiln a flow promoting additive, e.g. Al 2 O 3 or ZrO 2 may be used to prevent beadto-bead agglomeration. Typical firing temperatures are 1150-1600 C. Nickel-zinc ferrite and manganese-zinc ferrites are preferred products since they provide magnetic permeability, conductivity and other properties useful in the electrostatographic art. Examples describe the preparation of Ni-Zn and Mu-Zn ferrites in which deflocculants and binders are used to alter the nature of the product.
