An adjacent gauge stop (52) (Fig. 4, not shown) engages the outside of the pipe when the required groove depth has been machined and subsequent feed by the carriage 20 pivots the tool holder 22 about pivot bolt 49 to prevent scoring of the pipe or damage to the gauge stop. The internally expanding rotatable mandrel comprises central shaft 78 having a conical end portion 90 that enters in the gripping mandrel 66 and is axially moved therein by a clamping nut 94. The shaft 78 is keyed to rotate with a driven sleeve 76 of a reduction drive unit 68 which is belt driven from a motor of the apparatus. The carriage 20 includes an adjustable wedge block (26) (Fig. 3, not shown) to take up play in the dovetail slide 19.
