1388155 Coated sheet materials GEORGE M WHILEY Ltd 13 March 1973 [31 May 1972] 25554/72 Heading B2E [Also in Division B6] A transfer foil comprises a carrier sheet, a release layer on the carrier sheet, a transferable layer on the side of the release layer remote from the carrier sheet, and on that side of the transferable layer remote from the release layer a layer of adhesive which is capable of becoming tacky when heated and remaining tacky after removal from the heat source and after return to its original temperature. The transferable layer can be metallised, e.g. bright or matt gold or silver, bronze or aluminium powder, lacquered aluminium or real gold, pigmented, patterned, e.g. wood grain or a multi-colour design which can be random or register printed. The carrier sheet may comprise paper, regenerated cellulose or polyester. In a typical example polyethylene terephthalate film was coated by gravure printing with a solution of an ester wax release layer, and subsequently coated with a lacquer containing nitrocellulose, a butyl/methyl methacrylate copolymer and a dye by gravure printing, followed by vacuum deposition of an aluminium film on to the dried coating, application of an intermediate adhesive layer containing polyvinyl butyral, polyvinylacetate by gravure printing, and finally a prolonged tack adhesive layer comprising polyvinyl acetate, partially dimerised rosin by gravure printing. In Example 2 the prolonged tack adhesive comprises neoprene, chlorinated paraffinic hydrocarbon and an acrylic copolymer.
