Abstract

1385497 Photodegradable hydrocarbon polymers and foams thereof BIO-DEGRADABLE PLASTICS Inc 22 Feb 1972 [2 Nov 1971] 8106/72 Headings C3C and C3P Photodegradable hydrocarbon polymer compositions comprise polyethylene or polystyrene and a photosensitizing agent capable of initiating the decomposition of the polymer on exposure to ultra-violet light, the agent being benzophenone, anthrone, anthraquinone, 3,4- dihydrobenzaldehyde, o-chlorobenzaldehyde or 2,4-dimethyl acetophenone. The polystyrene may contain 5% of pentane as blowing agent, and 0À3% citric acid and 0À35% sodium carbonate as nucleating agents, and may be formed into foams, which after degradation are microbially consumable.
