Abstract
1383346 Filling apparatus MATHER & PLATT Ltd 27 March 1973 [5 April 1972] 15675/72 Heading B8T A rotary table filling machine is characterized by a capillary passage in the nozzle of each filling unit which sucks back any drips as the piston commences its suction stroke. Filling unit.-Fig. 4 shows the suction stroke of the filling unit 21 with liquid being transferred into the cylinder 40 from the receptacle 20 via valve port 50. For the discharge stroke a valve 48 is rotated 90 degrees by means of arm 52 to close an inlet port 50 and to connect the cylinder 40 to the nozzle 54 via ports 46, 49, 47. Liquid passes through slots 63 and causes the nozzle outer part 56 to move downwards relative to the nozzle inner part 55 against the spring 60 to open the outlet and allow discharge. When the piston has passed BDC the spring 60 moves the nozzle outer part 56 upwards and closes the outlet except for the capillary passage 62. Further piston movement before the valve 48 changes over causes drips to be sucked back through the capillary passage 62. Rotary machine.-The liquid receptacle 20 supports a number of filling units 21 on its periphery, the whole being powered to rotate with main star wheel 26 which locates the containers being filled. The empty containers are led to the machine by conveyer 24 and star wheel 25 synchronized with the machine and after filling are directed on to conveyer 27. Surrounding the receptacle 20 is a ring 30 adjustable vertically on three posts 31. Attached to ring 30 at pivots 32 is cam ring 36 which provides the vertical motion of rollers 42 and hence pistons 41, causing the cylinder 40 to fill over 180 degrees of machine rotation and discharge into the containers over the other 180 degrees. A second ring 37 holds the rollers 42 in contact with the cam ring 36 during their downstroke. The cam ring 36 is also attached to the ring 30 at a point opposite the pivots 32 by a threaded pillar which allows the throw of the cam to be adjusted. At 39 the rollers 53 run on to an arcuate cam 74 with a vertical lift and the resulting rotation of the arm 52 causes the valve to change from the discharge position to the charge position. 180 degrees from 39, the moving container 22 operates air valve 67 via arm 64 and links 66. This causes air cylinder 68 to extend and place roller 70 at the end of upper cam strip 72. With further rotation of the machine, roller 53 is directed by roller 70 to the under side of the upper cam strip 72 which then causes the valve 49 to rotate to the discharge position. In the absence of a container, roller 70 is retracted and roller 53 passes over the top of the cam strip 72 so that the valve is not operated and no discharge takes place.
