Abstract

1381508 Thermosetting resin compositions FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 1 Dec 1971 [21 Dec 1970] 55722/71 Headings C3B C3P and C3R Thermosetting resin compositions comprise a linear thermosetting polymer containing chemically reactive groups and a crosslinking agent therefor formed of a plurality of graded rubber particles comprising (a) a core of a crosslinked acrylic polymer derived from a major proportion of an acrylate or methacrylate monomer and a minor proportion of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing at least two non-conjugated terminal ethylenic groups; (b) an outer shell of a polymer containing chemically reactive groups and derived from a mixture of at least 30 mole per cent of methyl methacrylate and one or more ethylenically unsaturated copolymerizable monomers, at least one of which contains a chemically reactive group capable of reacting with the reactive groups of the linear polymer; and (c) an intermediate layer of a polymer derived from the monomer components of (a) and (b). The graded rubber particles are described and claimed in Specification 1,332,070. The thermosetting polymer may contain such reactive groups as hydroxy, carboxy, epoxy or ethylenically unsaturated groups and may be, for example, a phenol-formaldehyde resin, a melamine-formaldehyde resin, a resin containing olefinic unsaturation, or an epoxy resin. The compositions may optionally contain pigments and/or reinforcing fillers. In the examples the compositions comprise (1) methyl methacrylate/ glycidyl methacrylate copolymer and graded rubber particles containing epoxy groups (derived from glycidyl methacrylate) in the outer shell; (2) similar to (1) except for modifications in the graded particles; (3) the same as (1) but also containing glass fibre reinforcement; (4) methacrylic acid/methacrylonitrile/methyl methacrylate copolymer, diglycidyl ether of Bisphenol A and epoxy group-containing graded rubber particles; (5) similar to (4) except that the particles contain carboxylic acid groups (derived from methacrylic acid) instead of epoxy groups; (6) epoxy group-containing graded rubber particles and diglycidyl ether of Bisphenol A; (7) the same as (6) but also containing wood flour; (8) graded rubber particles containing epoxy groups which have been reacted with acrylic acid, diallyl phthalate prepolymer and t.-butyl perbenzoate; (9) melamineformaldehyde resin and epoxy group-containing graded rubber particles; (10) novolac phenolformaldehyde resin, epoxy group-containing graded rubber particles, wood flour, hexamethylene-tetramine, magnesium oxide and calcium stearate; (11) graded rubber particles containing hydroxy groups (derived from 2- hydroxyethyl methacrylate) and epichlorohydrin-Bisphenol A epoxy resin; (12-14) similar to (11) except that the hydroxy groups are derived from 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate, 2- hydroxypropyl methacrylate and 2-hydroxypropyl acrylate respectively.
