1380415 Steam iron BRITISH DOMESTIC APPLIANCES Ltd 7 March 1972 [20 Jan 1971] 2785/71 Heading D1A The composite sole plate of a steam iron comprises a detachable glass ceramic or other facing plate 15 secured to a support member 14 by a retainer which engages a co-operating surface or shoulder within an aperture of the facing plate 15, and includes at least one opening for. the passage of steam from a generator in the iron. In Fig. 1 the retainer forms the bottom of a steam generating chamber 12 and includes a dished washer 24 with a steam passage 24a, a flat disc 28 with a single aperture 29 and forming with the dished washer 24 a second chamber 12b for evaporating any water drops, an annular flanged member 22, a disc 27 with a plurality of steam apertures and a retaining bolt 26. The upper part of the chamber 12 may be defined by a part 13 which is separate from or integral with the support member 14 and a separate heating element 12a may be provided for steam generation. In Figs. 6, 7 steam passes from the chamber 12 through passages 45, vertical holes 46 and radial passages 47 to an annular chamber 56 formed between the support member 14 and the retainer 51 and thence through apertures 57 to the bottom of the soleplate. The facing plate is prevented from rotating by a conical extension 15a engaging a hole 58 in the support member 14. Alternatively the facing plate 15 may be prevented from rotating by a screw engaging a slot on the centre line of the plate 15. A lamp may be provided behind a glass ceramic facing plate. Alternatively the facing plate may be a vitreous enamelled steel plate. The water tank of the iron may be formed within the moulded handle and cowl assembly with a sealing plate (41) (Fig. 5, not shown).
