Abstract
1373816 Moulding hollow ceramic articles ADVANCED MATERIALS ENG Ltd 11 May 1972 [5 June 1971] 19133/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division C7] Hollow ceramic ware is made by vacuum forming, pressure forming, blow moulding or back extrusion of a mass of plastic green mixture to extend the mass and increase its surface area. The form is then sintered or reaction bonded in a reactive gas atmosphere. The plastic mixture may be made by mixing the ceramic powder such as Si either with an alginate-water-glycerol mixture, a methyl cellulose-latex-silicone mixture, benzophenone, toluidene or diphenylamine. The vacuum forming technique may be drape; plug assist; vacuum snap back; inverted drape; air forming with plug assist; or billow. A sheet of the green mixture may be formed by pouring or spraying the mixture on a glass former or by dipping the former in the mixture. The mixture is set on the former by spraying with methylated spirits containing 30% calcium nitrate. The sheet is then vacuum formed into a crucible. Alternatively a lump of the mixture of putty like consistency is back extruded to form a crucible. The Si crucible is then reaction bonded by heating in N 2 to form Si 3 N 4 .
