Abstract

1371889 Hot pressed metal coated carbon fibres UNION CARBIDE CORP 9 July 1973 [10 July 1972] 32705/73 Headings C7B C7D and C7F A composite article comprising a Ni base matrix reinforced with carbon fibres is made by coating the fibres with a Ni layer and an outer layer of a metal which can diffuse through the Ni and react with the carbon to form a metal carbide and then hot pressing the coated fibres. The carbide forming metal may be Ti, Zr, Hf, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W or Fe and it may be deposited up to a thickness of 5000Š by electrolysis, electroless coating, by decomposition of the carbonyl or halide or by sputtering. The Ni coating of 5 micron maximum thickness may be deposited by the same methods. Hot pressing is effected at 700-1300‹C and 500-4500 p.s.i.a. in N 2 , A, Xe, He or a vacuum. The examples disclose electro-plating of carbon fibres by deposition of Ni from an electrolyte containing NiSO 4 , NiCl 2 and H 3 BO 3 and either deposition of Cr from an electrolyte containing H 2 CrO 4 , Cr 2 (SO 4 ) 3 and H 2 SO 4 or deposition of Fe from an electrolyte containing Fe(NH 4 ) SO 4 . The coated fibres can be hot pressed in aligned layers or wound on a mandrel. The composites are used in subsonic and supersonic aircraft, space system components and other propulsion devices.
