Abstract
1371563 De-silvering photographic baths AGFA-GEVAERT AG 19 April 1972 [27 July 1971] 18022/72 Heading C7D Spent photographic bleach-fix baths which contain oxidizing agent in the form of iron (III) complexes of aminopolyacetic acids are de-silvered by a process which involves treatment with a reducing agent before cementation with iron. In addition to oxidizing agents such as iron (III) complexes of EDTA, the bleach-fix baths generally contain a fixing agent, e.g. a thiosulphate, and other additives, e.g. pH buffers. The reducing agent may be a dithionite, phosphite, hypophosphite, borohydride, water-soluble hydrazine derivative, hydroxylamine, semicarbazide, or carbohydroxide, or is ascorbic acid or formamidine sulphinic acid; particularly preferred is sodium dithionite, Na 2 S 2 O 4 . The reducing agent reduces the iron complex contained in the bath so that cementation of the silver with e.g. steel wool can be effected.
