Abstract

1362531 Bonded fibre rod MORGANITE MODMOR Ltd 2 May 1972 [16 March 1971] 6931/71 Heading D1R [Also in Divisions A1 A6 and F2] A reinforced synthetic resin rod comprises multiple wrapped layers of sheet reinforcing material and reinforcing fibres disposed between the layers, the whole being bonded together by cured resin. Organic, metallic or mineral fibres and phenolic, polyester and epoxy resins may be used. In the example a tapered rod is produced from a woven glass fibre sheet cut in the shape of a sector of an annulus and are impregnated with part cured epoxy resin. The sheet is secured to a tapered mandrel by wrapping it a few times around the mandrel and a thin coating of a liquid epoxy resin is applied. Carbon fibres are distributed on the sheet aligned parallel to the mandrel, the first third of the sheet, starting at the wider end being covered with 10cm length carbon fibres and the remainder being covered with 5cm carbon fibres of higher tensile strength but lower Youngs modulus. A pressure roller is applied to the uncoated side of the sheet whilst the mandrel is rotated to form the rod. A temporary cover of cellulose film is wrapped around the rod before it is cured in an oven. The rod is stiff at the larger diameter end and less stiff but of higher ultimate tensile strength at the other end and is used as a fishing rod. Golf clubs and vaulting poles may also be constructed. Resistance to bending may be maximised by aligning the warp or weft of the reinforcing sheet with the mandrel axis. Resistance to twisting may be maximised by cutting the reinforcing sheet on the bias and/or by laying the fibres at an angle to the mandrel.
