Abstract

1362250 Silica, silica sol. W R GRACE & CO 24 June 1971 [26 June 1970] 29713/71 Heading C1A A high-purity silica is produced by (i) forming a mixture of an alcoholic solution of ammonia or an ammonia releasing agent, (ii) thereby (when water is present in the mixture) or subsequently initiating hydrolysis of the mixture to form an alcoholic sol. and (iii) drying and recovering a fine size silica product from the alcoholic sol. The ammonia releasing agent may be ammonia (usually in the form of ammonium hydroxide-see Examples 1 and 2), formamide, acetamide, thiourea, hexamethylene tetramine and urea (Examples 3 and 4). The hydrolysis may be initiated by addition of water. The silicon orthoester may be an alkyl silicon orthoester having from 1-5 carbon atoms, e.g. ethyl orthosilicate. The alcohol may be ethanol (see examples), methanol, propanol, butanol or pentanol. Drying may be by freeze drying, fluid energy milling or distilling. The alcohol sol. may be converted into a aqueous sol. by dialysis.
