Abstract
1354691 Surgical valves M M BLACK and R E A OLIVER 6 May 1971 [12 Feb 1970 18 Aug 1970] 6814/70 and 39643/70 Heading A5R [Also in Division F2] A valve suitable for use as an artificial oesophagus has a conical or convex (e.g. spherical) diaphragm 22 (Fig. 5) with 4 or 8 radial splits defining triangular flaps 23 which are readily displaced to allow flow in direction A. Reverse flow is only allowed when the pressure is sufficient to buckle the flaps. The rim of the diaphragm is reinforced by a stainless steel ring and the flaps may have reinforcing ribs 25. A modified valve for replacing a natural heart valve has a ring 40 and three kite-shaped flaps 41 joined to the ring along major edges 43 and abutting each other, when the valve is closed, along minor edges 44. Each flap 41 has a fold 47, and point 46 lies in the same plane as points 48, 49 when the valve is closed. The diaphragm in each case is suitably of silicone rubber. In Fig. 5, the diaphragm when conical can have a base angle of 30‹ or 45‹.
