Abstract
1354502 Plate heat exchangers IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 4 Aug 1971 [28 Aug 1970] 41603/70 Heading F4S A heat exchanger block consists of a plurality of sheets (e.g. 0À1 to 1 mm. thick) made of a plastics material selected from fluorocarbon polymers, aromatic polyimides, high density polyethylene or polypropylene, adjacent sheets being spaced from one another by edge spacers, e.g. 12 (also of plastics material), which may be integral with or separately formed from the sheets. The spacers provide fluid passages 0À05 to 1 mm. thick between adjacent sheets. The elements of the block are bonded together by an adhesive or as a step followed by sintering, in the final curing of the plastics material. The material used may be a glass-filled composition for strength or a carbon-filled composition to increase heat transfer. Cross flow heat exchangers are described wherein the passages, e.g. 14, 15, Fig. 4, formed between adjacent sheets extend at right angles to each other through the block. Each passage may be further subdivided longitudinally by one or more intermediate spacers, e.g. 11 (or 47, Fig. 6), and these may be bonded to or integral with the plates or merely located in recesses in the plates. Headers which may have PTFE linings are clamped to the block (Fig. 5).
