Abstract

1352843 Reciprocating pumps N B JONES 13 May 1971 [27 Feb 1970] 9584/70 Heading F1A A pump, e.g. for blood, comprises a pipe 11 with two check valves 12, 13, valve 13 being reciprocated relative to valve 12, as shown, to provide a pulsating output, or both valves being reciprocated towards and away from each other to provide a non-pulsating output, Fig. 4 (not shown). The reciprocating pipe sections 15 containing the valves are either connected by bellows 17, 18 to the fixed pipe sections, or telescope relative to the fixed sections with interposed O-rings or rolling diaphragms. The check valves comprise segmented conical or spherical diaphragms, e.g. of silicone rubber. The valves are designed to buckle and open against the normal direction of flow when the back pressure is excessive. Valve 13 is reciprocated by an electric motor-driven cam 25 acting through lever 26 and slider 27 on rod 28. Alternatively, actuation may be pneumatic, hydraulic or electric.
