Abstract

1352374 Bending tubes L D J M WALRAVEN and H G HOOGENBOOM 19 April 1971 [18 Feb 1970] 21945/71 Heading B5A [Also in Divisions B8 and B6] A plastics tube is bent after applying heat to the tube substantially simultaneously at longitudinally spaced locations thereof between which heat is not applied, the tube thereby being softened at substantially only the spaced locations. The tube is heated by electric heating strips, or by infrared irradiation (4) (see Figs. 1, 2, not reproduced) with the unheated locations protected by bands 33 (Fig. 6), or a spirally wound strip, of polished aluminium foil. The foil bands have uniform or non-uniform width (see also Fig. 7, not reproduced), and may be supported on a sheet, wrapped around the tube and permeable to infrared irradiation. Methods of applying the foil bands are described (see Division B8).
