Abstract

1349269 Continuous casting CONCAST AG 9 Dec 1971 [10 Dec 1970] 57359/71 Heading B3F [Also in Division C3] A method of sealing clearances in the joint between a continuous casting mould and the stopping and withdrawing head used therewith in continuous casting comprises introducing into the joint a refractory composition consisting of a paste-like mixture of quartz sand and a binding agent. In the continuous casting process the stopping and withdrawing head is first preheated on a gas burner ring to a surface temperature exceeding 100‹ C., then attached to a dummy bar and inserted into a continuous casting mould. For a slab 1550 x 250 mm. in cross-section a clearance of about 6 mm. remains between the head and the wall of the mould. The binding agent is preferably sodium silicate but aluminium phosphate may also be used. The quartz sand preferably contains 90-95% by weight of SiO 2 and has a grain analysis of about 15% by weight of 1À0-0À3 mm., about 50% by weight of 0À3-0À1 mm., about 15% by weight of 0À1-0À02 mm., the remaining about 20% by weight being finer particles. The proportion by volume of quartz sand to water glass should preferably be 1À4 to 2À4.
