Abstract
1349150 Propelling aircraft DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 26 July 1971 [14 July 1970] 34172/70 Heading B7G An aircraft has a main propulsion engine which may be an aft-fan gas turbine engine on each side of the fore-and-aft centre line of the aircraft and a third jet engine 14 of substantially less maximum thrust than each of the propulsion engines, this third engine discharging its jet at a place which is on said centre line and a substantial distance aft of the centre of gravity of the aircraft, there being means by which the direction of discharge of the jet from the third engine can be varied so as to be inclined upwards or downwards with respect to the centre line, or to one side or the other side of the centre line. Preferably, the third engine 14 having an intake 12 is pitched downwards with respect to the centre line and the nozzle 8 of the engine provides a fixed angle of deflection of the gases with respect to the engine, the angle being greater than the pitch of the engine. The nozzle 8 is rotatable with a ring 16 mounted on the engine. It is stated that the nozzle may be mounted on gimbal rings or deflecting vanes may replace the nozzle.
