Abstract
1348920 Blowing lances; water-cooled apparatus BETHLEHEM STEEL CORP 19 April 1971 [16 March 1970] 23313/71 Headings F4B and F4T A water-cooled apparatus for introducing materials into the heated interior of a furnace chamber comprises an outer tubular member 4 concentric with and partly surrounding an inner tubular member 2 and joined therewith at the forward end 5, a spaced intermediate concentric member 3 defining a passage for cooling water, and a collar assembly 11 surrounding the portion of inner member 2 which is not surrounded by outer member 4, the assembly 11 being fixedly and sealingly secured to the rearward end of the inner member 2 (and intermediate member 3) at 15, 16, 17, and a fluid-tight expansion means providing a seal between the collar assembly 11 and the outer member 2. In the oxygen lance shown, gaseous oxygen passes through member 2 but other materials such as instruments or fuels for burning may be introduced therethrough. Alternatively, the material may be introduced down an intermediate, rather than central, passage. The fluid-tight expansion means may be, as shown, a slip joint having Q-ring seals 14, or may alternatively be a bellows joint (18), Fig. 2 (not shown), or a packing gland.
