Abstract

1343971 Reciprocating pumps or motors CESSNA AIRCRAFT CO 5 May 1971 [18 May 1970] 13276/71 Heading F1A In a reversible rotary cylinder, axial piston swash-plate pump or motor 10 in which the pistons 18 have ball ends 34 mounted in slippers 32 biased against an inclined plate 30 by a spring loaded spider plate 36 having an aperture 37 for each slipper 32, the plate 36 is rotated by engagement of the slippers 32 with the periphery of apertures 37, the rotational axis 58 of the plate 36 being located so that only inwardly moving pistons impart drive to the plate 36. By preventing transverse contact between the slippers of outwardly moving pistons, and the spider plate 36, lifting-off of the slippers from plate 30, and cocking of pistons 18 in their cylinders 17 is avoided. The required location of the spider plate 36 relative to the slippers 32 is ensured by arranging that the spider plate rotational axis 58 meets the shaft axis 54 at a point 60 further from the cylinder block 14 than the point 56 at which the axis 54 meets the plane through the centres of the piston ball ends 34. The minimum separation of points 56, 60 is defined in terms of the tilt angle of plate 30 and the tolerances in locating the cylinders 17 and apertures 34. A second set of pistons 16 is reciprocated by a swash-plate 24 and fluid enters and leaves cylinders 17 via bores 42 in the pistons 18 and holes 44 in the plate 30 which rotates with the spider plate 36 and acts as a rotary valve. In another embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown) the rotary block has a single set of pistons and a variable tilt swash-plate.
