Abstract

1343601 Making lamp-posts, masts etc.; stamping; extruding E C FRATER 8 Nov 1971 [12 Nov 1970] 53825/70 Headings B3A and B3Q Externally tapered metal tubes are made by fluid-inflating tubes of variable wall thickness so as to reduce the variation. Lamp-posts, ship's masts or booms may be formed in steel or aluminium alloy. The initial tube may be of constant or tapering external or internal crosssection, e.g. the external cross-section may be circular, oval, D-shape or of streamline form. In the example, the initial tube is formed by extruding a hollow billet on a tapering mandrel through a die (8), Fig. 1 (not shown), to form a tube having a constant outside diameter and a tapering bore. The mandrel (12) may be free, fixed to an extrusion ram (4) or moved at a different rate from that of the ram. Fluidinflation follows with axial pressure applied by members 16, 18 to form a tapered tube of constant wall-thickness. The necked end (22), Fig. 3 (not shown), may be removed. Aluminium alloy initial tubes may be annealed before inflation.
