A machine for washing glasses, crockery, cutlery, &c., comprises a basket or baskets 7 mounted on and rotatable with a vertical shaft 3 within an outer casing 1, means, e.g. an electric motor 2, for rotating the shaft 3, members 6 revolving with the shaft 3 for depending into and scooping up liquid from a trough 8 and directing it up the inner surface of the outer casing 1 on which vanes 9 and an annular baffle 15 are provided for directing the liquid into the basket or baskets, and means for discontinuing the scooping up of liquid when the contents of the basket or baskets 7 are to be dried. The members 6 are carried by a basket 7 or by a disc 5 resting on a ball race 4. The latter may be raised by rotating a cam 10 by a handle 12 to lift the members 6 out of the liquid in the trough. Alternatively the scooping up of the liquid may be discontinued by angular adjustment of the members 6, or by lowering the level of the liquid in the trough 8 by draining, lowering a floating tank or deflating an expandable body in the liquid, or by pumping liquid to a second container. There may also be provided a tank for rinsing water, and a pump for discharging rinsing water through jets on to the articles to be rinsed. The used rinsing water may be collected in a trough surrounding the casing 1.
