A transportable welding machine for buttwelding railway rails comprises movable and stationary pincer clamps for the rails, a drive for moving the movable clamp, profile cutters fixed to the jaws of the movable clamp for removing part of the burr from the top and sides of the weld joint upon longitudinal displacement of the movable clamp and at least one lower cutter secured to one of the clamps for removing burr from the bottom of the weld joint upon displacement of the lower cutter longitudinally or transversely of the welded rails. In an embodiment the machine comprises a stationary pincer clamp 1 for rail 2 and a movable pincer clamp 3 for rail 4, the clamps each comprising a pair of jaws pivoted on a common shaft 5 and the movable clamp 3 being drawn towards the stationary clamp 1 by a pair of hydraulic piston and cylinder devices 6, one on each side of the rails. The pivotal movement of the jaws about the shaft 5 is effected by hydraulic piston and cylinder devices 10, 13 connected between the upper ends of the pincer jaws. For cutting off part of the side and top burr of the weld joint a pair of profiled cutters 14, 15 are secured, respectively to the jaws of the movable clamp 3, and for removing the bottom burr a cutter 16 is secured to one of the jaws of the stationary clamp 1 to be movable across the joint by an hydraulic piston and cylinder device 17, 18. In operation after welding has been effected the jaws of the movable clamp are opened slightly and the movable clamp is drawn closer to the stationary clamp by devices 6 and burr is removed from the joint. The movable clamp is returned and cutter 16 is caused to move across the joint and remove burr. In a modification the cutter 16 is replaced by a device secured to the movable clamp and arranged to be moved into position by an hydraulic cylinder to remove lower burr as the movable clamp is further displaced to remove the side and top burr. In another modification, two cutter blades are provided on the movable clamp, one on each jaw to remove the lower burr as the side and top burr is removed.
