Abstract

1,233,584. Plate heat exchangers. LINDE A.G. 5 Aug., 1968 [22 Aug., 1967], No. 37208/68. Heading F4S. A plate heat exchanger has a heat exchange unit of spaced plates 3 forming flow passages 1, 2 accommodated in a housing formed by walls 6, 7, 9, 10, at least one side wall 6 or 7 of which forms the wall of a pressure chamber 20 or 21 located outside the housing, pressure in the chamber being maintained substantially similar to fluid flowing through the unit adjacent the wall to maintain the wall substantially free of pressure differential thereacross and so prevent deformation of the entire unit. The flow passages may contain corrugated inserts 4, 5, be formed of alternate flat and corrugated plates or be defined between corrugated plates in staggered contact. The side walls 6, 7 of the unit may be adjacent a common pressure chamber, Fig. 5. The flow passages 1 are connected to a lower distributing chamber 12 supplied with a heat exchange fluid through apertures 14 in the bottom wall 9 and to an upper collecting chamber 13 exhausted through apertures 15 in the wall 10. Seals 16, 17 at the ends of the passages 2 prevent entrance of a second fluid into the chambers 12, 13.
