Abstract

1,229,873. Cutting by plasma arc. MESSER GRIESHEIM G.m.b.H. 26 Aug., 1968 [26 Aug., 1967], No. 40725/68. Heading B3V. [Also in Divisions H3-H5] A plasma arc-cutting torch wherein an electric arc is formed between an electrode 17 and the workpiece 16, has a Laval-type gas nozzle 10. The plasma beam is produced by first generating an auxiliary arc between the electrode 17 and the nozzle inlet 20 to ionize the gas flowing from ducts 14 through the nozzle bore 11, whereupon the main arc is struck between the electrode 17 and workpiece 16 using a power source 18. The outwardly flared portion of the nozzle bore 11 has an angle α of 10-25 degrees, preferably 18 degrees, and a length L 0À5-0À8 times the total length L. The nozzle diameter at the narrowest point is 0À5-5 mm. and the wall thickness is less than 1 mm. Cooling water is supplied through a duct 22. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the electrode 17 is positioned on a ceramic ring (27) which is stuck to a flange (28) of the nozzle and which has gas duets 29 on its upper side to effect a rotary movement to the gas flowing through the nozzle bore (31).
