Abstract
1,227,341. Liquid column chromatography. PYE Ltd. and UNILEVER Ltd. 29 April, 1968 [30 March, 1967; 16 Nov., 1967], Nos. 14474/67 and 52291/67. Heading B1X [Also in Division F1] Liquid chromatograph apparatus includes means for heating the solvent liquid after its passage through a pump and prior to its entry to the chromatograph column, whereby air entrained in the solvent liquid is driven off. The liquid solvent is pumped from a container 40 to the chromatograph column 48 by means of a pump 10 (see Division F1) comprising a bellows 11 which is alternately compressed and extended by cyclically varying the air pressure within an outer vessel 10. Air passing through the polytetrafluoroethylene material of the bellows 11 and becoming dissolved in the solvent being pumped is driven off from the solvent by an electric heater coil 44. When sufficient air has accumulated the level of the solvent in the limb 42 of U-tube 41 is depressed and a ball float valve 43 falls away from a vent tube 43a to allow the air to escape. To ensure a continuous flow of solvent to the column, it may be fed by two pumps 10 operating in parallel but running out of phase.
