Abstract
1,227,179. Welding by fusion; soldering; cutting by fusion. RIKAGAKU KENKYUSHO. 7 June, 1968 [8 June, 1967], No. 27323/68. Headings B3R and B3V. [Also in Division H5] An arc torch, with no gas stream flowing directly around the cathode during operation, comprises a cathode 2, cathode bushing 9, gas stream bushing 12 and outermost bushing 6, and includes inlets 10, 5, 13 for gas flows 11, 4 and 14, respectively, the gas flow 11 ceasing during operation. Bushing 12 is omitted in some embodiments, Fig. 10, and Figs. 2, 5 (not shown). The bushings are either mutually insulated, Fig. 7, and Figs. 4a, 5, 6 and 9 (not shown), or the cathode bushing 9 is insulated from the other bushing or bushings, Figs. 8, 10, and Figs. 2, 3a, 3b (not shown). Gas flow 14 is usually an active gas, whilst gas flows 11 and 4 are protective gas. Circuitry is provided for transferring the arc 1 from between the cathode 2 and cathode bushing 9, to the bushing 12 and then to the workpiece 3, Figs. 4a, 4b, 4c (not shown). Bushing 6 has an aperture either larger, smaller or the same as the aperture in bushing 12, and bushing 12 has an aperture either smaller or the same as the aperture in bushing 9. The torch is used for coating, cutting, welding or soldering, and is used for welding inside tubes, Fig. 8, under water, or for joining workpieces of differing thickness, Fig. 10. Bushings 6, 12 may be rotated with respect to the torch, Fig. 9 (not shown). Gases used are helium, argon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen or carbonic acid gas. Bushing 9 is cooled. A.C. is superimposed on D.C. from the source.
