Abstract

1,225,448. Variable speed gear; clutches. AUDI NSU AUTO UNION A.G. 2 Dec., 1969 [12 Dec., 1968], No. 58785/69. Headings F2C and F2D. A motor vehicle variable speed gearing has an input shaft 1 parallel to an output shaft 6 on which latter is mounted rotationally free and axially fixed a gear 5 meshing with a gear 4 on the shaft 1, and adjacent the gear 5 on the shaft 6 is mounted axially free and rotationally fixed a reverse gear 16 and a sleeve 15 including a synchromesh clutch for the wheel 5 operated by sliding the sleeve one way (to the left as shown), sliding the sleeve in the opposite direction brings the gear 16 into mesh with a reverse idler 12, during which latter sliding the gear 5 is briefly clutched to the shaft 6 to brake the shaft 1. The gearing may be driven from an engine via a clutch 2, include gears 7 ... 10 for other ratios and drive the motor wheels through a differential 14. Clutch construction. Fig. 2.-The gear 5 is shown to have in addition to splines 25 for engaging similar splines 21 on the sleeve 15, a conical face mounting a synchronizing ring 19. This ring 19 is urged against the gear 5 by spacers 20 whenever balls 28 are depressed by projections 29 on the sleeve. These balls 28 are depressed only when the sleeve is between a central (neutral) position (shown) and either of two extreme positions, but not in any of these positions.
