Abstract
1,223,713. Air cushion vehicles. M. G. H. GIRODIN. 16 May, 1968 [26 May, 1967], No. 23421/68. Heading B7K. A hull for a captured air bubble vehicle has its lower portion subdivided into four cushion containing compartments 2, 3, 4, 5 constructed from the flat vehicle base 1 and the intersection of three longitudinal partitions 6, 7, 8 having flat cushion facing surfaces that incline towards the compartment interior, the middle partition 8 lying in the vehicle's plane of symmetry, with three transverse partitions having convex partcylindrical front surfaces that tangentially engage the horizontal plane through the partition's lower edges and rear surfaces which are vertical or inclined towards the compartment interior. The front bow-forming transverse partition is W-shaped with the central V- forming portions 16, 17 being connected to side portions 18, 19 which contain the branches of stem waves reducing drag effects therefrom by portions 22, 23 respectively and the stern forming and middle transverse partitions lie in a vertical plane with their longitudinal areas normal to the vehicle's plane of symmetry. The cushions within the compartments are fed with pressure air via narrow slots (not shown) positioned in the rear surfaces near the lower edges of the partitions so that should fluid supply cease, said cushions are trapped within the compartments by the rising water level thereby preserving vehicle buoyancy.
