Abstract

1,221,217. Washing machine detergent. UNILEVER Ltd. 17 May, 1968 [19 May, 1967], No. 23610/68. Heading C5D. A detergent composition contains (1) an organic anionic detergent, (2) soap and/or a nonionic detergent, and (3) a diether of a polyalkylene oxide diol of the following general formula in which R 1 and R 2 are alkyl groups having a total number of 2 to 30 carbon atoms, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> may each be H or CH 3 , and n is a number which is at least 1. The diether compound preferably contains 2 to 40 alkylene oxide groups and has an H.L.B. value lying between 1À0 and 4À0. 0À5 to 10% of the diether may be used, but generally 0À5 to 5À0% and often 1 to 3% is sufficient; most suitably the diether compound is a diether of polypropylene glycol. The anionic detergent may be an alkyl benzene sulphonate, alkyl sulphate or fatty alcohol sulphate. The soap is an alkali metal or ammonium salt of a C 8-25 fatty acid. Suitable nonionic detergents include alkylene oxide condensation products of alcohols, alkyl phenols or polyoxypropylene. A builder salt is usually present such as sodium tripolyphosphate, a nitrilotriacetate, an ethane-1-hydroxy-1-1-diphosphonate or a salt of a polymeric carboxylic acid. Other substances which may be present are 0-30% of an oxygen-liberating bleach such as perborate, 0-15% of a silicate, optical brighteners, carboxymethyl cellulose, bleach stabilizers and enhancers, perfumes, germicides and inorganic salts such as sodium sulphate. A preferred composition comprises 5-30% anionic surfactant, 1-10% of soap and/or nonionic detergent and an amount of builder salt such that the ratio of anionic detergent to builder salt lies between 1 : 1 and 1 : 5.
