Abstract
1,219,946. Extruding thermoplastic polymers. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 15 July, 1969 [14 Aug., 1968], No. 38926/68. Heading B5A [Also in Division B1] In the screw extrusion of thermoplastic polymeric materials, an intimate mixture of an additive and a first polymer is injected as a melt into a molten stream of a second polymer, the injection taking place between two conveying zones of the screw extrusion apparatus. As shown, a duct 10 connects zones 2 and 6 separated by a cylindrical collar 4, and injection is by means of a screw 11 in a direction substantially counter to the flow through duct 10 to promote mixing. A further collar 3 and duct 9 are provided, as well as vents 7, 8, to which vacuum may be applied. In a modification, the apparatus may comprise at least two separate screw extruders one feeding directly into the feed point of the other via a duct and the injection being into this duct. Further, screw 11 may be replaced by a ram. The first and second polymers may be different, particularly when the first polymer is itself the additive, e.g. as an impact modifier, but are preferably similar or the same. Specific polymers mentioned are polyethylene, polypropylene, poly-4-methyl pentene-1, polystyrene, PVC, polyvinylidene chloride, polymethyl methacrylate, polyamides and polyoxymethylenes. Additives mentioned are pigments, fillers, e.g. glass fibres or mica, stabilizers, lubricants, cross-linked polymers and dyestuffs. In a first example, polymerized methyl methacrylate is delivered to the extruder of Fig. 1 from a twin screw extruder and a melt compounded mixture of 50 parts by weight of barium sulphate pigment and 50 parts by weight of polymethyl methacrylate is injected by screw 11, the resultant mix being extruded to give an opal sheet. In a second example, using the same materials, the screw extruder is fitted with a mixing head as described in Specification 843,849 (see Division B1) and reference is also made to the use of a mixing head as described in Specification 787,764 (see Division B1).
