Abstract

1,218,549. Testing by compression. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. July 31, 1968 [May 18, 1967], No.23164/67. Heading G1S. Apparatus for testing rubber sealings rings, &c. comprises a base 10 supporting a sealing ring 24, a pressure plate 14 having an electrical contact 15, a clamping plate 12 connected to the base, a screw 17 for applying a load to the ring through the contact, load applying means (not shown) adapted to bear on the pressure plate and a load cell 23. The apparatus is constructed so that when the load applied by the load applying means exceeds the load applied by the screw 17, the contact 15 is removed from engagement with a hardened steel contact piece 16 to break an electric circuit. The screw 17 is initially adjusted until the force applied through the contacts 15, 16 is sufficient to compress the ring a predetermined amount. A gradually increasing load is then applied to the ring through the load cell 23, a compression spring 22 and a plate 20 connected to the pressure plate 14 by posts 19. When the load exceeds the load applied by the screw 17 the contacts 15, 16 are separated to give a warning or to record the applied load. The contact 15 is a hardened steel ball. Holes in the base enable posts of a tool 25 to be pushed through the base and engage the ends of the posts 19 to assist the removal of the ring.
