A gripper shuttle loom has a weft selection mechanism controlled by the jacquard. Selection may be from two, four or six wefts and selection from four wefts is described. The selector 21 (Fig. 3) is tilted to any of four positions by a rod 45 which is pivoted to a lever 42, 43 which is acted upon by two bell crank levers 36, 37 to set the rod 45 in any of the four positions (see Fig. 6). The selector is locked in position by a roller 53 and selection is made prior to movement of the selector and the face required to move the selector is stored in the period between selection and movement. Jacquard cords 85 (Fig. 7) act on two spring loaded levers 122 to tilt them if selected. Tilting of a lever 122 loads a telescopic member 115 which acts on a lifting plate 91 which is pivoted about 93 on a lever 28. Pivoting of the plate 91 is prevented by a withdrawable peg 137. Each lifting plate 91 is acted on by either of two oppositely moving cam operated pegs 102, 103 and vertical movement of a plate 91 pivots the lever 28 to load telescopic units 30 or 31 which act on the lever 42, 43 to give the required one of four positions. In use the jacquard cords 85 act on the levers 122 to load the telescopic members 115, on withdrawal of the peg 137 the lifting plates 91 are tilted about 93 so they may be acted on by the oppositely moving pegs 102, 103, vertical movements of the plates 91 loads the telescopic units 30 so that when the roller 53 is withdrawn the selector may rapidly move to the selected position. The mechanism is tuned so that the jacquard cords are operated two picks in advance.
