Abstract

1,216,129. 2,2-Bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propanes. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 10 April, 1968 [12 April, 1967], No. 17184/68. Heading C2C. 2,2 - Bis - (4 - hydroxyphenyl) - propanes are obtained when a phenol which is unsubstituted in the position para to the hydroxyl group is reacted with propyne, propadiene or a mixture of the two at elevated temperature, in the presence of sulphuric acid or an organic sulphonic acid and in the presence of divalent mercury ions. Suitable starting phenols are, for example, phenol, 2,6 - dichlorophenol, 2,6- dimethylphenol, 2 - ethyl phenol, 2 - butylphenol, 2 - chlorophenol, 2,3,5,6 - tetrachlorophenol, 2 - bromophenol and 2,6 - dibromophenol. It is preferred to use 2-20 moles of phenol per mole of propyne and/or propadiene and to carry out the process at 30-80‹ C. Preferred sulphonic acids are those having an alkyl or aryl radical having up to 20 carbon atoms. The mercury ions may be introduced into the reaction mixture by adding soluble mercuric salts or substances which will react with the acids used to form soluble mercury salts. A solvent may optionally be used. An example is given of the preparation of 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-propane from phenol.
