Abstract
1,214,847. Pipe couplings. L. SHAPIRO, and B. SHAPIRO. 19 Dec., 1967 [19 Dec., 1966; 3 July, 19671, No. 57654/67. Heading F2G. A coupling for joining the ends of pipes 10, 11 comprises clamping means consisting of rigid, complementary generally semicircular members 18, 19 having radial lugs 21, and an axially and circumferentially continuous circular gasket 27 interposed between the clamping means and the pipe ends and spanning the pipes. The gasket has diametrically opposed, outwardly extending, axially elongated integral ears 50 clamped between the lugs 21, the latter being urged toward each other by means such as screws 24, whereby the ears are compressed between the lugs; the ears are concavely curved and thickened at the inner edges thereof and the lugs have complementary curved portions whereby compression of the ears exerts a radially inward force on the gasket to accommodate for dimensional variations in the pipe ends and clamping means, the outer edges of the ears being clamped between the lugs radially outwardly of the complementary curved portions of the lugs whereby the lugs are spaced apart by the ears. The gasket may include internal annular ribs 30 ... 33 for forming a seal against the pipes, an external, annular rib or ribs 37, 39 and 40 which is or are accommodated within an annular recess 22 formed in the clamping means, and a central, internal annular rib 29 which is disposed between the adjacent ends of the pipes. When annular ribs 14, 15 are not formed on the pipes, flat, flexible, sealing bands 52, 52, Fig. 2, are placed on the exterior of or within the gasket, the ears 50 of which are recessed at 54 to accommodate the bands; or the latter are discontinuous and have transverse ribs which seat in grooves in the recess 22 of the clamping means. The gasket may also have external annular ribs opposite the ribs 30, 31 and 32, 33 or a single annular rib on each side of the recess 22 and accommodated in grooves formed in the clamping means.
