Abstract

1,213,642. Electromagnetically - releasable brakes. ELLISTON, EVANS & JACKSON Ltd. 26 Jan., 1968 [3 Feb., 1967], No. 5233/67. Heading F2E. In a spring actuated, electromagnetically releasable, external shoedrum brake a pair of pivoted arms 14, 15, each carrying a pivoted brake shoe 23, 24 are adapted to be applied by spring means 53 acting upon an armature plate 27 of an electromagnet 26 to apply the braking thrust via a thrust block 38 which projects towards the adjacent brake arm 14 and engages a roller 40 carried on the pivot pin 25 between the flanges of the brake arm 14, the opposite brake arm 15 being applied through a push rod 41. The brake is adapted to be released by energization of the solenoid which attracts the armature plate 27 against the force of the spring 53. The electromagnet 26 is of generally rectangular form with two compression springs 53 located above the polepiece 54 which is left uninterrupted. The force of the springs may be adjusted by means of a bolt 56 and adjustment of the brake is also permitted by the screw connection 44 at the end of the rod 41. Alternatively, the brake may be released, when the electromagnet is de-energized, by movement of a handle 48 in a clockwise direction to move the armature plate 27 of the electromagnet against the actions of the springs 53 to release the brake. In a modification (Figs. 5 and 6, not shown) the bolts 56 are replaced by studs (58) which pass through an end plate 39 and engage against the collars 55. At their other ends the studs 58 are secured to a horizontal common bar (60) which is adjustable.
