Abstract

1,211,175. Metal-vapour lamps. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 13 Feb., 1968 [16 Feb., 1967], No. 7099/68. Heading H1D. Sodium cleanup in a high-pressure lamp having an alumina envelope with a filling containing a sodium-mercury amalgam and an inert gas, which sodium exerts a partial pressure of 10 to 1000 torr. in operation, is prevented by arranging that the vapour pressure of sodium is lower than the equilibrium vapour pressure of sodium over sodium aluminate tending to condense at the coolest alumina surface in said envelope so that said tendency is inhibited. The required conditions may be obtained by adjusting the quantity of amalgam and the atomic fraction of sodium therein, having regard to the temperature of the coolest alumina surface in operation. The quantity of amalgam may exceed that vaporized in operation so that the sodium vapour pressure is excess-limited. Under this condition with the coolest alumina surface at a temperature of 600‹ to 1000‹ C., the atom fraction of sodium in the excess amalgam is from 0À6 to 0À8. The partial vapour pressure of the mercury is less than 10 atmospheres. Alternatively the amalgam may be totally vaporized so that the sodium vapour pressure is amount-limited. In the lamp shown, niobium end caps 12, 12<SP>1</SP> sealed to the alumina envelope 11 support tungsten electrodes 14, 14<SP>1</SP>, a niobium dummy exhaust tube 16<SP>1</SP> and a niobium exhaust tube 16 which is pierced at 18 and may form a reservoir where excess amalgam collects. The envelope 11 is supported by a single side rod frame 21 in an outer vitreous envelope 2 which is evacuated and provided with getter channels 25 containing barium powder. The inert gas is xenon. An oxygen-absorbing metal such as yttrium may be provided in the lamp as described in Specification 1,211,176 to destabilize sodium aluminate.
