Abstract
1,206,048. Uranium dioxide. NUKEM NUKLEAR-CHEMIE UND METALLURGIE G.m.b.H. 28 Feb., 1968 [1 March, 1967], No. 9589/68. Heading C1A. Free-flowing, sinterable uranium dioxide powder is produced by feeding moist ammonium uranyl carbonate and/or ammonium diuranate into a fluidized bed at 500-600 C., in a steam/ H 2 atmosphere. The bed may comprise uranium dioxide powder, and the material is preferably introduced in portions of such a size that complete decomposition of the added material occurs between successive additions. Similarly, the hydrogen is present in such a concentration as to accomplish this complete reaction. The bed is preferably kept far above the fluidization point to prevent agglomerization of the particles. The uranium dioxide powder produced may be subsequently heated at 600 C. to reduce the fluoride content, and then heated in a steam/air atmosphere in a fluidized bed at 600 C. to stabilize the powder by increasing the O: U ratio to 2À06-2À16. These three steps may be carried out in a single bed (Fig. 1, not shown), or in three separate, successive beds (Fig. 2, not shown).
