Abstract
1,205,951. Moulding tyres. DUNLOP CO. Ltd. 19 Jan., 1968 [21 Jan., 1967], No. 3249/67. Heading B5A. In a process of manufacturing a pneumatic tyre using a mould comprising radially movable patterned segments, the segments are loaded with tread forming rubber before their assembly and application to the carcass. The mould segments 16, Fig. 2, are loaded in a press 19 and pressed by a plunger 20 which forms a curved inside surface. The filled segments are transferred using a block and tackle mechanism, from the press to the mould where they are arranged as a discontinuous ring around the mould 11, 12 in which is located a beaded carcass. The segments are then moved radially inwardly by downward movement of a surrounding ring 29, the ring and segments having co-operating conical surfaces. The carcass is then expanded, e.g. by an inflatable core to engage the tread with the carcass. The mould is then moved to a curing unit. Part of the tread rubber may be applied to the carcass, the remainder being loaded and pressed into the mould segments. To compensate for shrinkage the mould segments may be loaded with a slight excess of rubber. To allow for the escape of air, channels or grooves may be provided on the tyre carcass or on the inside curved surface of the tread rubber. The tread rubber may be heated before application to the carcass.
