Abstract

1,205,298. Luminescent materials and uses thereof. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 23 Oct., 1968 [26 Oct., 1967], No. 50258/68. Heading C4S. A luminescent alkaline earth silicate activated by divalent Eu is of formula (Ca x .Ba y .Sr z .Eu p O) 2 . MgO.(SiO 2 ) 2 wherein (x + y + z + p) = 1 and one or two of x, y and z may be zero and 0.05 # p # 0-003. Preferably x # 0.4 and preferred compositions are (Ba(1-p)Eu p O) 2 .MgO.(SiO 2 ) 2 wherein 0.01 # p # 0.04 and (Sr( 1-p )Eu p O) 2 .MgO (SiO 2 ) 2 wherein p = 0À01, 0.02 and 0À05. In preparation, the starting mix may be heated at 1050‹ C. for 1 hr., ground, fired at 1150‹ C. for 1 hr. in both cases in a N 2 -H 2 (20: 1) atmosphere. An excess of SiO 2 is used to promote a smooth reaction and calcium, barium or strontium fluoride may be used as a flux. Excitation by the entire u.v. range and deep blue radiation and electrons is disclosed and also 430 to 550 nm. emissions. Reference is made to incorporation in luminescent screens, C.R.T.s, LP and HPMV lamps for illumination and photochemical processes and admixture with Mn activated magnesium arsenate and Sb and Mn activated calcium halophosphate.
