Abstract

1,203,890. Automatic voltage control. SIEMENS A. G. Oct.18, 1968 [Oct.20, 1967], No.49398/68. Heading G3R. [Also in Division H2] A stand-by power supply arrangement comprises a mains transformer Tr having its secondary winding connected by a rectifier bridge G which supplies load terminals by way of a first electronic switch, e.g. a transistor T1, and which charges a stand-by battery B by way of a second electronic switch, e.g. transistor T2; a switching signal applied at terminals 3, 4 controls transistor T1 so that the load voltage sensed at terminals 1, 2 is maintained constant, whilst a further switching signal applied at terminals 7, 8 and dependent upon the battery voltage as sensed at terminals 5, 6 controls transistor T2 so as to regulate the charging current to the battery which thus tends to be maintained in a fully charged state. Should the mains voltage drop substantially, or the mains supply fail, the battery B will supply the load by way of a diode D1, and the switching transistor T1 will maintain load voltage constant during battery operation. The supply arrangement includes an input smoothing capacitor C1 and an output smoothing filter L1, C2, D2; transistors T1 and T2 are preferably controlled at a high switching frequency, e.g. 20, 000 c.p.s.
