Abstract
1298961 Timing ignition; ignition systems NISSAN MOTOR CO Ltd 5 Dec 1969 [10 Dec 1968(2) 5 Feb 1969] 59443/69 Heading F1B An ignition system for an automative internalcombustion engine for a motor vehicle comprises a battery 11, an ignition coil 13 having a primary winding 13a and a secondary winding 13b, the primary winding being connected at one terminal thereof with the battery through an ignition switch 12 and the secondary winding being connected selectively to ignition plugs 17a-17d, and an ignition distributor having a first interrupter 14a and a second interrupter 14b, the second interrupter being connected in parallel with the first interrupter to the primary winding through ignition timing control switch means 18 which is normally kept open and the second interrupter being arranged to provide ignition timings retarded from the timings determined by the first interrupter. The ignition timing control switch means 18 is closed when the motor vehicle is driven under predetermined conditions, whereby (a) when the switch means is open the first interrupter and the primary winding are in series with the battery to provide normal ignition timings and (b) when the switch means is closed the primary winding and the first and second interrupters are in series with the battery to provide retarded ignition timings. The control factor governing the actuation of the control switch may be the vehicle speed, the engine speed, the vacuum level in the intake manifold of the engine or the angular position of the throttle valve in a carburetter or a combination of two or more of these factors may govern the control switch. The control switch may be controlled by the position of a speed selector lever or by hydraulic pressure from an automatic transmission system.
