Abstract

1296875 Seal for wafer cells CLEVITE CORP 17 April 1970 18525/70 Heading H1B Electrolyte leakage is prevented in primary cells of the flat type, which can be stacked to form a battery, by enclosing the cell elements in a non-conductive electrolyte resistant integument or outer cover 6, 7, e.g. a plastics film, which has an aperture at each end for permitting electronic connection between adjacent cell units and by adhesively fixing the cathode current collector plate 4 to the outer cover 7 by means of an adhesive sealing ring 11, e.g. of asphalt interposed therebetween, which ring encircles the aperture in the cover. Another adhesive sealing ring 9 seals anode 1 to outer cover 6 and surrounds the aperture therein. A layer of electrolyte-absorbent material 5 is interposed between the outer cover 7 and the cathode current collector 4 and is radially external to and surrounds the adhesive ring 11. A similar layer 8 may be placed between the anode and outer cover 6. Electrically conductive beads 14, 15 are provided through the apertures in the cover and sealing rings to provide electrical connections. The anode 1 may be of Zn, Mg, Al or cadmium oxide and the cathode depolarizer mix 3 enclosed in separator 2 may comprise MnO 2 , mercuric oxide, silver oxide or nickel oxide mixed with carbon. The electrolyte may be KOH, NaOH which may contain sodium or potassium zincate, or it may be NH 4 Cl used with gelling agent such as carboxymethyl cellulose or starch. The electrolyte absorbent members 5, 8 may be a film of carboxymethyl cellulose or its sodium salt which may be applied on a paper base. Other suitable materials are starches and gels and cellulose papers either uncoated or coated with vinyl acetate or vinyl alcohol.
